Atalla, AL

The Heidelberg Materials Giant Resource Recovery (GRR) Attalla sits on 290 acres in rural northeast Alabama. The facility is unique because in addition to receiving containerized and bulk shipments of wastes in drums, it is also the largest aerosol recycler in the country.  These waste streams are to be processed prior to shipment to Heidelberg Materials Harleyille cement kiln and other final disposal and recycling facilities getting us to a zero landfill recycler.

Similar to our Sumter facility, our Attalla facility operates a drum extruder capable of cutting the bottoms from the drums and then hydraulically “ramming out” the solids from the drums. This advanced equipment has benefitted our customers by significantly increasing capacity. Because our Harleyville operation is one of the only kilns capable of directly burning hazardous waste solid material, the Attalla site offers exceptional hazardous waste solid capabilities, including managing wastes that traditionally go to incineration.

Attalla offers the only system that disposes of waste aerosols by recycling 100% of the hazardous components within our integrated company. Our unique waste management process minimizes the risks, environmental burdens, and liabilities associated with the disposal of aerosols, while making an immediate impact on the sustainability and recycling objectives our customer’s demand. We recycle hazardous, universal and non-hazardous, empty and non-empty aerosol waste in full compliance with all applicable RCRA, EPA, and state regulations. We have safely recycled over 185,000,000lbs of aerosols since 2009.

GRR’s large volume recycling process safely crushes metal aerosol containers and separates them into three recyclable components. The liquids are captured and blended into a waste supplemental fuel which is consumed for energy recovery as a one-to-one replacement for fossil fuels in the production of portland cement. The fuel-type propellants are burned as fuel, as a re-placement to natural gas, in the on-site drum reconditioning operation that prepares drums for reuse or for steel recycling. Closing the Circle, the reclaimed metal is reused in recycled metal products.

All consumer packaging is recycled where feasible or utilized as a solid fuel. Our recycling process is zero landfill.

Steel aerosol cans are made from an average of 25% recycled materials. GRR enhances the environmental advantages of aerosol packaging through recycling. With a focus on sustainable packaging and practices and environmental sensitivity, GRR is a leader in aerosol safety and compliance.

As a full-service environmental company, our agreements with multiple additional outlets and national transportation companies allow us to manage many different wastes you may generate throughout the country.
