During Heidelberg Materials’ annual Global Safety Week, Cadomin Quarry in Alberta, Canada, welcomed Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen. As the limestone source for our Edmonton cement plant, Cadomin Quarry plays a key role in supporting the Province of Alberta’s ambitious construction and development plans by supplying high-quality cement to the ready-mixed concrete producers throughout the market.
Safety Week is a time to reflect on the shared responsibility to protect each other and continuously improve safe work practices. The presence of provincial leadership at Cadomin Quarry reinforces the value of collaboration between industry and government in building a safer future. The visit also underscored the importance of health and safety in resource development and highlighted the dedication of the teams who prioritize safety every day.
Premier Smith toured the site and met with workers to learn more about the quarry’s operations and safety practices. She praised the team’s commitment to both environmental stewardship and worker well-being.
“Alberta’s success depends on safe, sustainable resource development, and that starts with people who take safety seriously every day. It’s inspiring to see the commitment of the Heidelberg Materials team at Cadomin Quarry, protecting workers, caring for the environment, and driving the growth that keeps our province building,” said Premier Danielle Smith.
The visit also provided an opportunity to showcase the long-term investments being made in safety infrastructure and training. Oliver Patsch, President of Heidelberg Materials North America’s Northwest Region, shared his appreciation for the premier’s engagement.
“We appreciate Premier Danielle Smith and Minister Todd Loewen for visiting Cadomin during Health and Safety Week,” said Patsch. “Their participation highlights the importance of our teams’ daily work and the long-term investments we’re committed to making.”
Another key step in Heidelberg Materials ongoing sustainability efforts is the transition of the existing surface mine at Cadomin to an underground mining operation contained within the quarry’s original mineral surface lease boundary. This initiative will help lower our environmental footprint by minimizing surface impacts, reducing the potential for dust and noise, and eliminating the need for large amounts of caprock removal, all while ensuring continued access to high-quality limestone.
Heidelberg Materials extends its sincere thanks to Premier Smith and Minister Loewen for their time and support of the company’s commitment to fostering a culture of safety, care, and excellence.
