Last month, Heidelberg Materials commemorated the historic Village of Dexter, which once stood on the site of our Nazareth, Pennsylvania, cement plant. The event brought together former residents, employees, and community leaders to recognize a village that played an important role in the region’s industrial past.

 

“The story of Dexter is an important chapter in the history of the Lehigh Valley. Preserving and recognizing communities like this ensures that we honor the people whose hard work and dedication helped shape this region. This marker serves as a meaningful reminder that progress is built on the foundations of those who came before us,” said Congressman Ryan Mackenzie.

 

The commemorative marker, located along Route 248, stands as a lasting tribute to the generations of people, communities, and industries that shaped the region. Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the importance of preserving and sharing this history.

 

Before Heidelberg Materials established operations in the area, the site was home to Dexter, a village developed in the early 1900s by the Dexter Cement Corporation. The community consisted of 29 homes—some hand-built by workers—that provided housing for employees and their families until 1953.

 

Former Dexter resident Joseph C. Petraglia expressed appreciation for the installation of the marker, highlighting its significance in preserving the memories of those who once called the village home.

 

Constructed from locally sourced limestone from the quarry, the marker features remarks from Petraglia, who initiated the project in collaboration with Heidelberg Materials employee Luis Rodriguez.

The Dexter marker stands not only as a tribute to the past, but also as a reminder of the people and values that helped shape the site today. Heidelberg Materials is proud to carry that legacy forward, staying connected to the communities it serves and building on the strong foundation laid by those who came before.
