Last week, the National Sand, Stone and Gravel Association (NSSGA) announced the recipients of the 2023 Environmental Excellence Awards. We are pleased to announce that the Heidelberg Materials Thornton Quarry was selected as a recipient in the Gold Category.  The Excellence Awards recognize operations that actively demonstrate a commitment to the exemplary use of environmental controls and systems. NSSGA recognized a total of 10 Gold, 11 Silver and 84 Bronze winners during the first session of the Legislative & Policy Forum.

Our Thornton Quarry, located in Illinois, works to minimize the quarry’s environmental footprint. The Thornton team takes many actions to convert wastes into a resource. Materials that are recycled include used oil, oil filters, anti-freeze, metal drums, light bulbs and fixtures, batteries, computer equipment, tires, belting, water, and paper products. In addition to these mitigation strategies, regular employee training and community education are some of the steps the Thornton Quarry has put in place to make sure environmental controls are met or exceeded.
