A Story of Coexistence: Great Horned Owls at Pine Ridge

Earlier this year, our Pine Ridge Sand and Gravel facility in Springfield, Manitoba, had the unique privilege of hosting a family of Great Horned Owls at the site. In a fascinating display of nature's adaptability, a pair of owls chose the facility’s conveyer as their nesting site, a reminder of the unexpected ways wildlife can intersect with quarry workspaces.

As the facility prepared for production, the mother owl and her two owlets were discovered nestled beneath one of the conveyers. Recognizing the importance of protecting this species, staff at the site reached out to Manitoba Conservation for guidance. Their swift response allowed the site to safely relocate the owlets to a makeshift nest, ensuring both the well-being of the owl family as well as the continuation of production.

Over the weeks, the owlets grew and ventured out, with the mother owl diligently providing for them. This culminated at the end of the May long weekend as the nest was found empty, the owlets having moved on, ready to embrace their next stage of life.

This experience was profound reminder of the harmony that can exist between industry and wildlife.

“This experience aligns perfectly with the spirit of our Quarry Life Award, which encourages sustainable quarry management and biodiversity,” said David Perkins, Vice President of Government Affairs & Communications and the Quarry Life Award National Coordinator for Heidelberg Materials North America.  “It would be great if the story of this family of owls sparks some interest in our biodiversity program at Heidelberg Materials and generates some excitement about participating in our Quarry Life Award.”

The Quarry Life Award represents an opportunity for researchers, students, and communities to contribute innovative ideas for nature-positive quarry management. The sixth edition of the Quarry Life Award is now underway, and participants have until November 18, 2024, to submit project proposals. Join us in celebrating biodiversity and the innovative spirit of the Quarry Life Award. Together, we can create a future where industry and nature thrive in harmony.
