Slag cement supplied by Heidelberg Materials helped meet aggressive goals for resilience, sustainable design and versatility in the Hillman Garage, a winner in the 2023 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards in the durability category.
The 590-space parking garage is located in Annapolis, Maryland. Early planning and execution of the project was guided by the City Dock Action Committee, a community group. In addition to prioritizing concrete mixes with 35-40% reduced carbon emissions, the committee requested that high performance structural elements of the garage be “right sized” to ensure optimized design and minimize the carbon footprint of the structure.
Chaney Enterprises worked with the project team to customize low carbon concrete mixes that included 50% slag cement. The combination of slag cement with portland limestone cement helped deliver on the project’s demanding construction schedule, as well as met durability requirements for the optimized concrete elements, which were designed to have a 75-year service life.
The inclusion of slag cement lightens the color of concrete, which in turn reduces urban heat island effect by improving reflectivity. The bright, aesthetically appealing pavement of the Hillman Garage allows the rooftop to double as community space when not in use for parking.
A grand opening for the garage was held June 14, 2023.
