Hindu American Religious Center Phase VII Building: Winner of a 2024 PCI Design Award

Heidelberg Materials supplied Type III cement for the Hindu American Religious Center Phase VII Building in Hightstown, NJ, which won the 2024 PCI Design Award “Religious Structure Honorable Mention.” The building is part of a Hindu campus in New Jersey that is expected to become the largest outside of India.

Nearly 700 precast concrete pieces, including 156 insulated stone wall panels, were used to construct the two-story, 146,784 square-foot religious center. While the design initially called for a steel structure, the owner was convinced to convert the project to precast concrete, accelerating the project schedule and reducing costs.

To match existing campus buildings, the project owner requested a façade of imported Indian sandstone and also requested a particular façade pattern. The stone was challenging to handle and place, so precast producer Jersey Precast worked extensively with the Natural Stone Institute of America to devise an anchorage system that would protect the sandstone during the import process and address potential thermal expansion and contraction.

“Concrete provided a great solution for this project. Its versatility, economy and resilience make it the best choice for this and similar projects,” said Larry Rowland, Sustainability Market Manager, Heidelberg Materials North America.
